The School of Engineering recently hosted three leading academics from the Civil Engineering Faculty at Tadeusz Kościuszko Cracow University of Technology in Poland. The Faculty is one of the largest faculties at the University with over 4500 students. Edyta Plebankiewicz PhD Eng (Director of Institute of Building and Transport Management), Renata Kozik PhD Eng (Deputy Director of Building and Transport Management) and Agnieszka Leśniak PhD Eng spent one month researching Irish construction practices and reviewing WIT’s cutting-edge undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Renata says “During our visit we had the opportunity to learn about the tendering procedures and construction investment process in Ireland. We have noticed a lot of similarities in both the construction process, as well as in the field of teaching. WIT use the most up to date planning, cost estimating and BIM software which prepares students well for the future of the construction industry.” The visitors were treated to a special visit to the new Waterford City Fire Station site where they met Construction Management students who are on work placement as well as some recent WIT graduates. Edyta commented that “The work placement programme provides a great opportunity for student to hone their practical skills as part of their study programme.” The visit took place under the project “Cracow University of Technology development program, the top quality teaching program for prospective Polish engineers; University of the 21st century”, co-financed by the European Union within the confines of the European Social Fund and realized under surveillance of Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
